Communication and Relationships Between Chimpanzees
Goodall noted that chimpanzees have a complex social system including ritualized behaviors and distinct communication methods, with a "language system" containing over twenty individual sounds. Chimpanzees have a "caste" system which places dominant males on top. They communicate to improve relationships, but sometimes put on violent "displays" to intimidate or show dominance.
Most communication between chimpanzees occurs through sounds and calls, but they also use touch to comfort one another and develop long-term bonds. Jane observed that these bonds can last 60 years or more. However, Dr. Goodall also discovered that chimpanzees engage in primitive and brutal warfare, the longest recorded account being a four-year war between groups of chimpanzees at Gombe.
