Process Paper
How We Chose Our Topic
We are both very interested in primates, and we had previous knowledge about Dr. Jane Goodall before selecting her as our topic. We wanted to research more about her work regarding the chimpanzees of Gombe due to the fact that Jane’s discoveries had such a major impact on how the world viewed chimpanzees and humans. After watching a few short documentaries on Dr. Goodall’s career, we became very interested in researching more about the effects of her discoveries. Through our research, we discovered that her work was more important than we could have imagined due to its importance and impact on the views of what defines “man.”
How We Conducted Our Research
We visited many different websites that described Dr. Goodall’s life and career as a primatologist. In addition, we found the Jane Goodall Institute to be especially resourceful due to the fact that it provided a deep understanding of Jane’s mission to help the environment as a whole and its inhabitants. Finally, we watched many short clips from the Jane Goodall Institute that provided accounts from Jane herself about her discoveries regarding the chimpanzees of Gombe.
How We Selected Our Presentation and Created Our Project
Having used a similar website-making program before in advanced Language Arts in sixth grade, we were excited to use Weebly to create our NHD website. We chose to create a website because of the countless options that are given through designing the website and using different types of media to create an organized structure that is appealing to the viewer. We were able to find sound effects such as a chimpanzee call to directly tie in with our topic, which helps to convey our thesis in an indirect way.
How Our Project Relates To the Theme
Dr. Jane Goodall’s life and career strongly relate to the theme of Leadership and Legacy. Dr. Goodall showed leadership through her determination to study chimpanzees in depth as no other primatologist had done before. She basically lead the way to discovering that humans are not the only creatures that use tools. Jane additionally discovered that chimpanzees eat meat, and these discoveries affected the way other primatologists such as Dian Fossey and Louis Leakey conducted their studies. Also, Goodall’s leadership is shown through her conservation efforts in places like Tanzania. She shows this through her programs such as TACARE. Jane Goodall has left a legacy of discovery through her research that is still felt today through her many organizations and programs such as Roots & Shoots. Because of Dr. Jane Goodall’s discoveries, the definition of “man” was forever changed.
